Here’s a classic Vanilla Custard Slice (creamy, soft, and irresistible) — the kind everyone loves 🍰


🍮 Vanilla Custard Slice

Ingredients

Pastry

  • 2 sheets puff pastry

Vanilla Custard

  • 1 L milk
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 120 g sugar
  • 60 g cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract or vanilla sugar
  • 40 g butter

Top (optional)

  • Powdered sugar

How to Make

  1. Bake the pastry
    Bake puff pastry sheets at 200°C / 390°F until golden. Cool completely.
  2. Make the custard
    • Heat milk with half the sugar.
    • Whisk yolks, remaining sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla.
    • Slowly pour hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking.
    • Return to heat and cook until thick and smooth.
    • Remove from heat, stir in butter.
  3. Assemble
    • Place one pastry sheet in a tray.
    • Pour hot custard over it and smooth.
    • Top with second pastry sheet.
    • Chill at least 4 hours (overnight is best).
  4. Finish
    Dust with powdered sugar and slice.

Tips for Perfect Slices

  • Cut the top pastry first, then assemble — prevents cracking
  • For extra creaminess, fold in a little whipped cream once custard cools slightly
  • Best served well chilled
