Here’s a simple and delicious recipe for Sweet Fried Bread—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and coated with sugar or syrup. It’s perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a sweet snack.

🍞 Sweet Fried Bread

Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 4–6 slices of day-old bread (white, brioche, or sandwich bread works well)
  • 1/4 cup sugar (or adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2–3 tbsp butter or oil for frying
  • Optional toppings: honey, maple syrup, powdered sugar, chocolate sauce, or fresh fruit

Instructions

1. Prepare the Coating

  1. In a shallow bowl, whisk together milk, egg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
  2. In another bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon (if using).

2. Dip the Bread

  1. Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Dip each slice of bread in the milk-egg mixture, coating both sides, but don’t soak too long.

3. Fry the Bread

  1. Place bread slices in the hot skillet.
  2. Cook 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and slightly crispy.

4. Coat with Sugar

  1. Remove fried bread from the skillet and immediately sprinkle with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

5. Serve

  • Serve warm with honey, maple syrup, fruit, or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Tips & Variations

  • Extra fluffy: Use thick slices of brioche or Texas toast.
  • Flavor boost: Add a pinch of nutmeg or orange zest to the milk-egg mixture.
  • Chocolate twist: Drizzle melted chocolate over the fried bread for a decadent treat.
  • Savory version: Skip sugar and cinnamon, and sprinkle with salt and Parmesan for a savory snack.

This Sweet Fried Bread is crispy, golden, and perfectly sweet, making it a quick and satisfying treat for any time of day.

I can also give a traditional deep-fried version that’s more like a doughnut if you want.

Do you want me to do that?
