For the Steak:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80% lean for juiciness)

  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

1. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix gently until just combined—don’t overwork the meat.
  3. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape each into an oval or round patty.

2. Cook the Patties

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the patties and cook 4–5 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. Remove patties and set aside.

3. Make the Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk continuously for 1–2 minutes to make a roux.
  3. Slowly pour in beef broth, whisking to avoid lumps.
  4. Add salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 3–5 minutes until thickened.

4. Combine and Serve

  • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon gravy over them.
  • Simmer 2–3 minutes to let flavors meld.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or creamy grits.
  • Add steamed green beans or corn on the side for a true Southern touch.
