Here’s a classic Southern Smothered Hamburger Steak recipe—juicy seasoned patties simmered in rich onion gravy. Total comfort food!

🍽️ Smothered Hamburger Steak

Ingredients (Serves 4)

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 recommended)

  • 1 small onion, finely diced

  • 1 egg

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • ½ tsp paprika

  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

Onion Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 1 large onion, sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tbsp flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)

  • Salt & pepper to taste

🍳 Step 1 — Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a bowl, mix beef, diced onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt & pepper.

  2. Form into 4 oval patties.

🔥 Step 2 — Brown the Patties

  1. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil.

  2. Brown patties for 3–4 minutes per side (they don’t need to be fully cooked).

  3. Remove and set aside.

🧅 Step 3 — Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter.

  2. Add sliced onions and cook until softened and golden, about 8–10 minutes.

  3. Add garlic; cook 30 seconds.

  4. Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.

  5. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring.

  6. Add Worcestershire and thyme.

  7. Simmer until thickened (about 3–5 minutes).

🍳 Step 4 — Smother the Steaks

  1. Return patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.

  2. Cover and simmer on low 20–25 minutes, until patties are fully cooked and gravy is rich.

🍽️ Serve With

  • Mashed potatoes (perfect for the gravy!)

  • Rice

  • Egg noodles

  • Green beans or collard greens

⭐ Tips

  • For extra flavor, add mushrooms to the gravy.

  • Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.

  • Add a splash of heavy cream for a creamy gravy.

If you want, I can also give you a smothered mushroom version, a brown gravy diner-style version, or a slow cooker version!
