My bathroom sink has been draining slower by the day, and plumbers are fully booked until after Christmas. What can I try first?

You can often fix (or at least greatly improve) a slow bathroom sink without a plumber, using things you probably already have. Try these in order, from easiest to strongest.

1️⃣ Boiling Water (fastest first step)

Why it works: Soap scum and toothpaste soften with heat.

What to do

  • Boil a full kettle or pot of water
  • Pour it slowly down the drain in 2–3 stages
  • Wait a minute between pours

⚠️ Skip this if you have PVC pipes that are very old or visibly fragile—otherwise it’s usually safe.

2️⃣ Baking Soda + Vinegar

Why it works: Breaks down soap, grease, and organic buildup.

Steps

  1. Pour ½ cup baking soda down the drain
  2. Add 1 cup white vinegar
  3. Cover the drain and wait 15–30 minutes
  4. Flush with hot water

💡 Tip: If it foams up immediately, that’s a good sign—it means buildup is reacting.

3️⃣ Remove and Clean the Sink Stopper (very common fix)

Why this matters: Bathroom sinks usually clog from hair + toothpaste + soap, and it often gets stuck right under the stopper.

How

  • Pull the stopper straight out (or unscrew underneath the sink)
  • Remove hair and gunk (gloves help 🤢)
  • Rinse with hot water
  • Reinsert the stopper

👉 This alone fixes a huge percentage of slow drains.

4️⃣ Use a Plunger (yes, on a sink)

Important trick:

  • Cover the overflow hole with a wet cloth or tape first
  • Add enough water to cover the plunger cup
  • Plunge firmly 10–15 times

This creates proper suction instead of air escaping.

5️⃣ Try a Drain Snake or Zip Tool (cheap & effective)

  • Plastic drain zip tools cost very little and are perfect for hair clogs
  • Insert, twist, pull out slowly
  • Clean tool, repeat if needed

🟢 Much safer than chemical drain cleaners.

🚫 What to Avoid

  • Harsh chemical drain cleaners (can damage pipes and make future plumbing harder)
  • Mixing chemicals together
  • Ignoring it—slow drains usually turn into full blockages

⚠️ Call a Plumber Sooner If:

  • Water starts backing up
  • You smell sewage
  • Multiple drains are slow (could be a main line issue)

✅ Best Quick Plan

If you want the highest success with the least effort, do this:

  1. Remove and clean the stopper
  2. Baking soda + vinegar
  3. Hot water flush

If you want, tell me:

  • Whether the sink has a push stopper or lift rod
  • Whether it’s draining slowly or almost not at all

I can give you step-by-step instructions tailored exactly to your sink.
