Posted on January 22, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic Southern-style Cornbread Dressing recipe—comforting, flavorful, and perfect for holidays or a cozy dinner.

Cornbread Dressing 🍞🥣

Ingredients (Serves 6–8)

Cornbread Base:

  • 4 cups crumbled cornbread (day-old works best)
  • 1 cup all-purpose bread, cubed or torn

Vegetables & Flavor:

  • 1 cup celery, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper (optional), chopped
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

Liquid & Seasoning:

  • 2–3 cups chicken or vegetable broth (adjust for desired moisture)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried sage (or 1 tbsp fresh)
  • 1/2 tsp thyme
  • 1/2 tsp poultry seasoning

Optional:

  • 1/2 cup melted butter (adds richness)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Cornbread Base

  1. Crumble day-old cornbread into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add the cubed bread and toss to combine.

2. Sauté Vegetables

  1. In a skillet, melt butter or heat oil over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onion, celery, bell pepper, and garlic until soft and fragrant (about 5–7 minutes).
  3. Stir in parsley and remove from heat.

3. Combine Ingredients

  1. Add sautéed vegetables to the bread mixture.
  2. Sprinkle in salt, pepper, sage, thyme, and poultry seasoning.
  3. Pour in chicken or vegetable broth gradually until the mixture is moist but not soupy.
  4. Stir in beaten eggs to help bind the dressing.

4. Bake the Dressing

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  3. Transfer the dressing mixture into the dish and spread evenly.
  4. Bake uncovered for 30–40 minutes, until the top is golden and slightly crisp.

Serving Tips

  • Serve hot alongside roast chicken, turkey, or pork.
  • Garnish with extra fresh parsley for color.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the oven or air fryer.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Using day-old cornbread prevents the dressing from becoming too mushy.
  • For extra flavor, add cooked sausage, bacon, or mushrooms to the vegetable mix.
  • If you like it creamier, mix in a little sour cream or cream before baking.

I can also make a shortcut “skillet cornbread dressing” recipe that’s done in one pan in 20 minutes for weeknights.
