Posted on November 29, 2025 by Admin

Here is a warm, comforting, and hearty Amish Hamburger Steak Bake—simple ingredients, old-fashioned flavor, and perfect for a family dinner.

Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

For the hamburger steaks:

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder

For the gravy/bake layer:

  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 packet brown gravy mix (optional but adds richness)
  • 1/2 cup milk or cream
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp parsley (optional)
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Optional add-ins:

  • Sliced mushrooms
  • Sliced onions
  • Sliced potatoes (thin) for a layered casserole version

Instructions

1. Preheat oven

  • Heat to 350°F (175°C).

2. Make the hamburger steaks

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, onion, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  2. Shape into 6–8 thick patties.
  3. Quickly sear in a skillet (2–3 min per side) to brown.
    • This step adds flavor but can be skipped if you’re short on time.

3. Arrange in baking dish

  • Place the browned patties in a 9×13 baking pan.
  • Add mushrooms or sliced onions on top if using.

4. Mix the gravy

Whisk together:

  • beef broth
  • cream of mushroom soup
  • gravy mix
  • milk/cream
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • parsley
  • salt & pepper

Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the patties.

5. Bake

  • Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake an additional 10–15 minutes until bubbling and thickened.

6. Serve

Serve over:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Egg noodles
  • Rice
  • Amish buttered noodles

The gravy soaks into everything—comfort food at its best.

Tips

  • Richer gravy: Add 1–2 tbsp butter before baking.
  • Vegetable version: Add carrots or thin potato slices around the patties.
  • Make ahead: Assembles well and reheats beautifully.
