Posted on November 30, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a classic Southern Chicken-Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes & Creamy Country Gravy—crispy, tender, and pure comfort food:

🍽️ Chicken-Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes & Gravy

⭐ Ingredients (serves 4)

For the Chicken-Fried Steak

  • 4 cube steaks (or tenderized round steaks)
  • Salt & black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup milk or buttermilk
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

For the Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk (more as needed)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

For the Country Gravy

  • 3 tbsp flour (from leftover seasoned flour is fine)
  • 3 tbsp butter or frying drippings
  • 2–2½ cups milk
  • Salt & black pepper (heavy on pepper!)

🔥 Instructions

1. Make the mashed potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water 15–20 minutes until fork-tender.
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper.
  3. Cover and keep warm.

2. Prepare the steaks

  1. Pat steaks dry. Season both sides with salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  2. Set up dredging station:
    • Bowl 1: Flour (season lightly with salt/pepper).
    • Bowl 2: Eggs + milk whisked together.
  3. Dredge steak in flour → dip in egg wash → dredge again in flour.
  4. Press the flour on firmly so you get a thick, crispy crust.

3. Fry the steaks

  1. Heat ¼ inch of oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Fry steaks 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  3. Transfer to a wire rack or paper towels to drain.

4. Make the country gravy

  1. Drain the skillet, leaving 3 tbsp drippings. (Or use butter.)
  2. Whisk in 3 tbsp flour and cook 1 minute until lightly golden.
  3. Slowly whisk in milk, stirring constantly.
  4. Simmer until thickened, about 3–5 minutes.
  5. Season generously with salt and lots of black pepper.

5. Serve

Plate creamy mashed potatoes, top each steak with warm peppery gravy, and serve with green beans, corn, or biscuits.

💡 Tips for Perfect Chicken-Fried Steak

  • Double dredge for extra crunch.
  • Let the coated steaks rest 5 minutes before frying to help the crust stick.
  • If gravy gets too thick, add a splash of milk to loosen it.
  • For extra flavor, add a dash of hot sauce to the egg wash.
