Here’s how to clean dirty bed pillows to leave them white and smelling sweet

Posted on December 3, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a step-by-step guide to clean dirty bed pillows and make them white, fresh, and smelling nice:

What You’ll Need:

  • Mild liquid detergent
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar (optional, for extra freshness)
  • Pillowcases and covers
  • Dryer or clothesline

Step 1: Check the Care Label

  • Look at your pillow’s tag to see if it’s machine washable or requires hand washing.
  • Most synthetic and down pillows are machine washable; memory foam usually isn’t.

Step 2: Pre-Treat Stains (Optional)

  • If there are visible stains, make a paste of baking soda and water.
  • Apply to the stain, let sit 30 minutes, then gently scrub with a soft brush.

Step 3: Machine Wash Pillows

  1. Wash two pillows at a time to keep the machine balanced.
  2. Use warm water and a mild liquid detergent.
  3. Add ½ cup of baking soda to the wash for whitening and odor removal.
  4. Optional: Add ½ cup white vinegar during the rinse cycle to boost freshness.

Step 4: Rinse and Spin

  • Run an extra rinse cycle to make sure all detergent is gone.
  • Use a gentle spin to remove as much water as possible.

Step 5: Dry Pillows Thoroughly

  • Tumble dry on low heat with a few clean tennis balls or dryer balls to keep pillows fluffy.
  • If air-drying, place them in a well-ventilated area in direct sunlight. Sunlight naturally whitens and kills bacteria.
  • Make sure pillows are completely dry to avoid mold or mildew.

Step 6: Fluff and Freshen

  • Shake and fluff pillows before putting them back on the bed.
  • You can also lightly sprinkle baking soda on dry pillows, let sit 15–30 minutes, then vacuum to refresh between washes.

This method works for both synthetic and down pillows, leaving them white, soft, and smelling fresh.

If you want, I can also give a DIY natural pillow deodorizer to keep them smelling sweet between washes. Do you want me to share that?
